Deception Pass Wedding | Mel + Lee
Mel and Lee’s (of Modern Nest Northwest) Deception Pass Wedding at The Bluff on Whidbey. Purveyors and restoration artists of Mid-century and modern furniture and decor, these two designed their wedding on a blank canvas. Both the ceremony and reception design was comprised almost entirely of thrifted wares. Each mudcloth pillow was hand sewn. Each table, bouquet and centerpiece was themed after a certain gemstone. Even the bridesmaid and groomsmen chairs were thoughtfully considered and hand restored by our bride and groom. So much time, passion and detail went into the creation of this fully DIY Mid-century bohemian dream. And soon they plan to bring that dream to others in the form of their own rental company.
Not many can say they’ve photographed their best friends from before they knew one another ’til their wedding day. Photography brought Melanie and I together in high school and college. She became my muse, and I became hers. We’ve been documenting one another’s lives and milestones since the beginning. Now, we document yours side by side! Coincidentally, I had been taking photos of Lee at parties before we even knew one another. When he came into our lives years later, I captured him with her as they fell #madleeinlove.
Last July, I followed them to the top of a mountain on the Almafi Coast where Lee got down on one knee and proposed. And on August 3rd of this year, I stood by their side as they promised forever to one another with my camera in my hands instead of my bouquet. Being so intimately involved in their lives has been the greatest, most unforgettable honor.
Special thanks to Kamra Fuller for being the greatest “second main” so I could also participate in some of these wedding festivities as Melanie’s Maid of Honor.

Just after the sun had set and we thought portraits were all but wrapped up, the bridge closed for evening construction. Having an empty Deception Pass Bridge to run up and down in your wedding clothes is one of the rarest occurrences I’ve witnessed in my career. Even the construction workers were shocked!
