Peter + Jill’s Roche Harbor Resort Wedding
A few years ago, I attended a Roche Harbor Resort wedding when my friends Jake and Katie got married. I had never seen a wedding or a venue more beautiful than this magical little harbor village on San Juan Island. “This is the kind of place you get to shoot at when you’ve really made it,” I thought. Unbeknownst to me, I would return several years later to document Peter and Jill’s special day. It all began with my contact form. I have a question that asks, “What’s the nerdiest thing about you?” Peter and Jill expressed that just everything was nerdy about them in the best way possible.
They told me about their Harry Potter themed engagement party first. As if I didn’t think it could get any better, it turns out it is a tradition in Peter’s family to celebrate your 33rd birthday with a Hobbit Coming-Of-Age party. Of course I asked for pictures! They had everything from beautifully painted, life-size Hobbit hovels made of cardboard and acrylic to running around barefoot. Talk about authentic! I knew immediately we were going to get along great.
There were so many quirky, unique aspects of Peter and Jill’s life and love of all things nerdy that shined through on their wedding day. The cake was cut with a hand forged sword for crying out loud! When the night ended, they made their grand via a handmade wooden sailboat Peter had built with his brother. The family followed them down the docks singing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and “Kissed The Girl” from The Little Mermaid.
Witnessing two families come together so seamlessly and celebrate such a lovely, unique duo was more than I could ask. At the end of this night, I just sat in my car for a little while so I could take it all in. Between travel and photographing, it had been an 18 hour day by the time I got home. But I have never felt so accomplished.
