Galleries from every season, planning tips, and everything you'll ever need to know about having a Volunteer Park Conservatory wedding. Written by a Capitol Hill, Seattle based wedding photographer.
Volunteer Park Conservatory is a greenhouse micro wedding venue located in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. It’s part of Volunteer Park, which means you get two settings in one: the warm and greenery of a greenhouse, plus outdoor portraits around the ponds, the water tower, willow trees, and flowers.
And as someone who lives in the neighborhood and photographs many weddings here a year, I SWEAR BY IT!
It is shockingly easy to have a wedding here. At around $350 to reserve, it's just a few more bucks than getting married at the Seattle courthouse, and you'll have it all to yourselves. This hidden gem is the most affordable wedding venue in the city that still feels like a luxury space.
Then the only other things you'll need are an officiant, two witnesses - which can even be anyone - and a marriage license. Any friend or family member can get ordained in the state of WA online for free. Many wedding photographers are also ordained, myself included. It only takes 10 minutes, and it's just as legit as a judge or professional.
Because it’s a greenhouse, it stays around 70–75 degrees year-round. Rain, cold, and gray Seattle skies won't affect your ceremony or your wedding photos at all. Plus you can wear a summer wedding dress in winter and feel completely comfortable!
This space is especially perfect for plant lovers or couples who want something intimate, architectural, and quietly beautiful without breaking the bank. No decor budget needed - it decorates itself and comes with 18 chairs!
In the sections below, I’ll cover booking costs, photo galleries from every month, a sample timelines, seasonal considerations, and even nearby reception spaces.
How to Get Married at Volunteer Park Conservatory
Getting married at Volunteer Park Conservatory is incredibly effortless. There are four quick to-do's, and that's all it takes!
The Conservatory is managed by Seattle Parks and Recreation, not by independent venue staff.
Step 1: Secure a Ceremony Permit
All weddings require a ceremony rental permit through Seattle Parks & Recreation.
You can fill out the permit application here.
Official ceremony permit page:
https://www.seattle.gov/parks/rentals-and-permits/outdoor-ceremony-reservations
Applications are typically accepted on a rolling calendar for dates up to about one year in advance. But apply early! Dates (especially weekends) can book up months in advance, especially for late spring and summer.
All applications must be received at least 30 days prior to your event, and it may take up to 14 business days for the parks department to process and respond to your application.
Step 2: Get your marriage license online
Order your marriage license from your local county office. Most charge around $170.
Step 3: Find an officiant (easy and free)
In the State of Washington, anyone can get ordained in about ten minutes. A friend or family member can get ordained online for FREE.
You can also hire a professional. Some of them write beautiful bespoke ceremonies. Arissa Rench is my favorite!
I'm also ordained, and can marry you while also photographing your wedding. No additional charge!
Whether you go to a judge, have a friend marry you, or ask me to do it.. it's just as legit!
Step 4: Get 2 witnesses
To make it official on the license, you'll need two witnesses to sign.
Even if you won't be having any guests, it's OK!
Anyone can be a witness (except your officiant). Your wedding photographer, the caretaker of the conservatory that day, or even two random passersby.
THAT'S IT. That's all you need to do to get married at Volunteer Park Conservatory.
Ceremony Capacity
Maximum guest count: 25
(This includes everyone except vendors.)
18 chairs are included by request and must be setup by you and you guests.
Rental Timeframe
The greenhouse is available Tuesday through Sunday and can only be reserved for private ceremonies after public hours.
Two hours is likely all the time you will need to book the space for.
There are two rental time slots:
- 4:15 PM (best January - early May for lighting)
- 6:15 PM (best late May - August for lighting and cooler temperatures)

Seasonal Availability - What To Expect Based On The Month
As of 2026, the Conservatory is available for weddings January through August.
The Conservatory is NOT available September through December while they set up and host their holiday event.
Also note that Volunteer Park itself hosts seasonal concerts and community events on some days beginning in late spring and throughout summer. The noise levels can sometimes be distracting.
During May, the outside of the conservatory becomes a popular backdrop for prom photos for hordes of high schoolers. You or your photographer may need to politely ask if they can move momentarily if you would like to use the outside space for wedding photos.

Flowers In The Park
Volunteer Park remains green most of the year in many places, making it one of the more lush backdrops for wedding photos even in January.
General greenery on trees: Early May until early November
Cherry Blossoms: Mid March until early April (they exist, but aren't always in the prettiest locations that work for wedding photos)
Willow blossoms and magnolias: Late March until Early April
Rhododendrons: Mid March to mid May (peak in April and May)
Bluebells: Early to mid May
Hydrangeas: Early June to Late August (peak in July/August)
Dahlias: Mid July through October (typically in bright sunlight most of the day)

How Much Does a Volunteer Park Conservatory Wedding Cost?
Pricing is set by Seattle Parks & Recreation and may change annually. This typically brings the venue rental to roughly $350–$400 total.
Current structure (subject to change):
- Approximately $177 per hour
- Two-hour minimum (perfect amount of time)
Potential cost of a Volunteer Park Conservatory wedding based on the Seattle average:
- Venue: $350
- Photographer: $1,800 - $2,600
- Officiant: FREE for a guest to get ordained online
- Marriage License: $170
- Dress: ~$500 – $6,000
- Suit: ~$500 – $2,000
- Hair + makeup: ~$300 – $500
- Bouquet + boutonniere: ~$170 – $380
✅ Total cost: roughly $3,800 – $12,000
For couples wanting a truly affordable but luxury-feeling wedding venue in Seattle, this is one of the most accessible options in the city. It is only $50 more to rent than having a courthouse wedding on a Friday.
Best Time of Year to Get Married Here
Because it’s a greenhouse, every month has distinct advantages. Even January and February!

Winter
Starting in January, the space feels especially lush compared to the gray city outside. It’s warm, protected from rain, and beautifully green while most of Seattle is leafless. It's also dark enough until daylight savings for a sparkler exit!
I recommend a 4:15 PM reservation time for the best light during winter.
Clare and Jess had their wedding on January 24 and arrived around 4:30 PM. Their ceremony was during twilight (sunset at 4:57 PM).
Yasi and Tyler had their wedding on February 11 and they had light for most of their 4:15 PM reservation (sunset at 5:26PM), so they had a sparkler exit!
Breanna and Yaara had their wedding on March 10. They had light the entire time, and it wasn't quite dark enough for a sparkler exit by the end of their rental time around 6:00 PM (sunset at 7:08 PM).

Spring
Brighter light inside and blooms outside.
Late March and early April often bring magnolia and willow blooms in the south side of the park. Early to mid May brings insane patches of bluebells throughout the park.
May can bring high foot traffic outside due to prom photo season.
I recommend a 4:15 PM reservation time for the best light during spring.
Chy and Alex had their wedding on April 1 at 4:15 PM and the magnolias and willows in the park were blooming.
Chasen and Nick had their wedding on May 4 at 4:15 PM and there were bluebells all over the park!
Amanda and Paul (scroll past Chasen and Nick) had their wedding on May 31 at 4:15 PM and the bluebells were gone.

Summer
Long daylight hours and glowing natural light inside the greenhouse.
However, the greenhouse can feel very warm. Especially during heat waves! If you’re booking a summer ceremony, plan hydration and breathable attire.
I recommend a 6:15 PM reservation time for the best light and cooler temperatures during summer.
Susie and Stephen had their wedding on June 22 at 6:15 PM. The sun was mostly behind the trees throughout most of the greenhouse and the light made the greenhouse feel exceptionally bright, airy and vibrant. A look you really only get in peak summer!
Jason and Elle had their wedding on July 14 at 6:15 PM The sun was a little lower behind the trees, making for a more shaded feel inside and a more golden hour feel outside after the ceremony.
Kim and Mark had their wedding on August 23 at 6:15 PM. Their photos around the park were very golden hour feeling, and the sun was entirely behind the trees during their rental time. However, they still got golden hour photos in the desert room (the last room to get sun).

Fall (unavailable...usually)
The Volunteer Park Conservatory is typically unavailable for reservations from September through December due to seasonal displays inside the Conservatory.
HOWEVER, I've had September weddings on the books in both 2025 and 2026 so it's always worth inquiring about!
Even if the conservatory is not available on your desired fall date, you can still take wedding photos around the park and in front of the greenhouse during this time.
Volunteer Park is the number one pick by my couples who are getting married at the Seattle courthouse, Sole Repair Shop, The MV Skansonia, and other inner city Seattle venues that don't have many photo locations nearby.
Highlight Galleries From Every Month
I have photographed nearly 75 weddings at Volunteer Park Conservatory. Here is a highlight gallery from every month so you can get an idea of which month is the best fit for you.
Each couple shown had approximately 2-3 hours of photography coverage total at Volunteer Park with some opting for additional coverage at a reception location afterwards.
What a Ceremony Timeline Looks Like
Here’s a sample timeline that works well with a 4:15 PM rental. Shift everything by 2hrs for a 6:15 PM rental.
3:30 PM
Meet at the south end of Volunteer Park for "first look" and portraits around the ponds, water tower, and willow trees.
4:15 PM
Begin rental. Use the first 30–60 minutes for greenhouse portraits while guests arrive later.
5:00 PM
Guests arrive.
5:15 PM
Ceremony begins in the Seasonal Room (the most popular and recommended ceremony space).
Ceremonies typically last 10–20 minutes.
After ceremony:
- Sign marriage license
- Immediate family photos inside
- Larger group photos outside with the Conservatory as backdrop
Important Notes:
- Conservatory staff does not set up chairs. Guests or your planner should assist with setup.
- The two-hour block is generally more than enough time if you plan intentionally.
Optional Exit Ideas
Sparkler exits are permitted outside the building on park pathways. Longer sparklers photograph best at dusk. Bubbles, ribbon wands, and similar simple exit ideas also work great!
Because I photograph here frequently, I help couples structure their timeline so it never feels rushed!

Nearby Reception and Private Dining Locations
Since Volunteer Park Conservatory doesn't make for the best reception space, most couples move to a nearby restaurant for dinner or a small reception.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need a permit?
Yes. A ceremony permit through Seattle Parks & Recreation is required.
How many guests are allowed?
Up to 25 total. There are only chairs available for 18.
How long should we book the Conservatory for?
2 hours is plenty of time for couple photos in the greenhouse, a ceremony, signing your license, and group photos afterwards.
How long should we book a wedding photographer for?
Minimum: 2 hours for photos inside and just outside the greenhouse only
3 hours for photos around the park as well (highly recommended! it's STUNNING!)
4 or more hours if you will be having some reception coverage at a second location
How can we play music during our ceremony?
You will need to bring your own sound equipment. I also recommend hiring a student from the UW School of Music to play some strings! It's crazy affordable and helps support a student's professional resume.
Can you have a reception there?
You can remain inside during your rental time, but outside catering and alcohol are not permitted. Most couples move to a restaurant afterward.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
Yes.

Who This Venue Is Perfect For
